Why Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth are the third set of permanent molars to appear, but they aren’t particularly useful in today’s world. By the time that they grow in, your mouth is already overcrowded. This increases the likelihood that wisdom teeth will grow in crooked, cause spacing issues, or shift the position of your other teeth.
To prevent the wisdom teeth from causing harm to your other teeth, and to fix impacted wisdom teeth, which can be painful, extraction is often necessary in order to ensure your oral health and proper functioning of your teeth.
When Is Extraction Necessary?
The only way to know if your wisdom teeth will be a problem is if you come to an appointment with us. When you come into our office, we will take an x-ray of your mouth so that we have a better understanding of what is happening with your teeth. If we see any of the following it will be an indication that you need to get your wisdom teeth removed:
- Overcrowding: As mentioned above, only a certain number of teeth can fit comfortably in your mouth at the same time. When wisdom teeth grow in, there is usually not enough space. As a result, the rest of your teeth will occupy the same area and become uncomfortably crowded.
- Bite Issues: When your teeth run out of room, they begin to shift, which leads to a misaligned bite. If left untreated, an improper bite can create headaches that are caused by pressure and unnecessary strain from your other teeth overcompensating.
- Impacted Teeth: An impacted tooth is a tooth that cannot grow out of the gums; without room to grow, the tooth buckles down in the gums. Because they are trying to erupt from the gums but are blocked, they can cause painful pressure in your gums and jaw.

Wisdom Teeth Removal
After determining that your wisdom teeth need to be removed we will schedule an appointment where you come into our office for an extraction. You’ve probably heard stories about how difficult recovery can be, and that’s why we want to make sure you’re prepared for the procedure and what recovery entails.
- Sedation: Our primary concern (in addition to providing you with amazing results, of course!), is your comfort as a patient. Before beginning the procedure we will numb your mouth so you feel as little as possible
- Extraction: We will then gently remove your wisdom tooth with the use of our expert equipment. The procedure is relatively quick and usually takes less than an hour in total to complete.
- Education: Our dentists will show you how to properly care for your teeth after the extraction. We will instruct you on how to clean the location of the tooth so it heals right, and give you guidelines on the appropriate food to eat so that the area won’t become infected.
- Recovery: Recovering from any surgery is no fun. To have a quick and relatively easy recovery, follow our guidelines. You will be able to avoid developing dry socket, gum pain, infection, and can return to your normal activities and the food that you love soon!
